When looking to design a coffee website, making use of website templates (sometimes referred to as themes) will definitely save you time.

Website templates will allow you to publish content and pages in a predefined format, helping you to avoid having to code or hire a web developer.

Fortunately templates almost always allow for a significant degree of customization, ensuring that even if you use one you still reserve the ability to make the website your own.

Templates are often specific to certain CMS platforms (Shopify, WordPress, Wix etc..) but are also categorized according to their style or their type of backend code and framework. You'll find templates specific to HTML5, or they will specify that they are "built in bootstrap", for instance. In contrast, you might find templates that are "made for restaurants" and, fortunately, many that are "made for coffee shops" etc...

This article will provide a walkthrough of how website templates work, and which ones we recommend for use with a coffee website.

Mobile Responsive Website Templates

Before we get started please note all website templates listed here are "mobile responsive".

Mobile responsiveness refers to the ability of the template and website to render in a way that is fully functional on multiple devices including mobile, desktop, tablets etc..

Websites were initially developed for desktop computers and traditional web browsers. Once the use of mobile devices proliferated developers began to adapt, sometimes by creating two "versions" of the website: one that looked good on mobile and one that looked good on desktop.

The more elegant solution turned out to be "Responsive" design which dynamically changed the websites' CSS styles and other design related elements depending on the device that was loading the website.

Most contemporary themes and website templates are built using a mobile responsive framework and that includes the templates listed here.

WordPress Templates & Themes

WordPress happens to be the single most popular CMS, with over 28 million websites currently powered by their platform.

Their eCommerce specific offering is called WooCommerce, and is built off the same platform. Most of the templates we've identified are WooCommerce based to reflect the focus on selling online.

Like Shopify, WooCommerce refers to its templates as "themes", and the ones we've identified represent the best themes you'd want to consider if building a coffee website on their platform.

The theme supports Google Fonts and allows you to customize CSS directly in the WordPress interface.

In terms of eCommerce related functionality the theme is very robust. It provides a mega menu and many different page layouts across home, product, and blog categories. Coffee King is a WooCommerce compatible theme that was recently made to support WordPress 5.6. It's an HTML5 template compatible with the "Visual Composer" page builder plugin.

The theme contains parallax effects and is also fully responsive.

One thing worth calling out is the Delivery page layout that comes with the theme. The theme works really well for an in-person coffee place, but with eCommerce compatibility, an app download section and the aforementioned delivery layout is clearly well put together if you are looking to scale.

For instance, I really love that they have components and page layouts for wholesaling and international delivery call-outs:

The design quality of the theme is apparent from many of the reviews. The reviews also seem overwhelmingly positive with respect to customer service and ease of customization. All things considered this is a very reliable and scale-able theme.

Shopify Templates & Themes

Shopify Themes are built for exclusive use on the Shopify CMS platform. Themes are developed by Shopify themselves or their partner network.

All themes are built for use with the "Liquid" template language, essentially used to structure and load dynamic content, created by Shopify.

Like most other templates, the advantage of Shopify's themes is that they allow you to use and access great designs and features without having to code or do any development work. Customizing themes is actually more intuitive than other CMS platforms like WordPress, so as long as you pick an appropriate theme you will often find using the theme and tailoring it to your store fairly easy.

The Kardone theme does things a bit differently than the other website templates here. The theme consists of the usualy product and merchandising functionality but the layouts are just different enough to set them apart from the rest.

This is an HTML5 theme built with Bootstrap. It also incorporates Google Fonts, Parallax, integrates well with Google Maps, and offers the ability to build out a mega menu.

Most impressively, they explicitly callout the Google Page Speed Insights and GTMetrix page speed scores:

The theme design is quite elegant and of course very customizable. All things considered this would be an ideal theme if you have a large number of products and product types to showcase.

HTML5 Templates & Themes

HTML5 is a coding / web development language that, like all versions of HTML, is used to structure a website.

HTML5 is essentially the latest "version" of HTML and includes capabilities that make it more adaptable to different types of browsers and devices.

HTML5 also further enhances website code by including elements like

"main", "section", "article", and "aside" etc.. that are readable by computers and search engines, helping them to better understand the nature of the content contained within.

As you may have noticed, some website templates we've already listed are using "HTML5". This is because a number of CMS platforms, including WordPress and Shopify, are able to render the website in HTML5. However, it's important to understand that HTML5 is NOT a CMS. It's basically one type of code a CMS can use to build the structure of a website.

In this section we'll detail website templates and themes are contain only the HTML5 elements. They are not compatible with any one CMS and while they are much cheaper, they are intended more as a foundation for those who can customize them further by coding themselves or hiring a web developer.

Cafena is an HTML5 theme that tries hard to be very slick and elegant and more often than not succeeds.

The obvious strenght is in it's product category page which natively supports advanced filters and categories along with very smooth animations. Impressively the product pages also facilitate customer reviews fairly seamlessly.

The theme is also built on the increasingly popular Bootstrap 5.x Framework and contains many different variations of home pages, product pages, and other page types. Moreover the theme is regularly updated and was last modified July 30, 2021.

Mister Coffee is a modern looking HTML5 website template that is designed specifically for coffee shops. The "Where to Buy" page is a nice touch for those with multiple in person café's.

The template does a good job of including some useful page types and designs for testimonial pages, blogs, and "coming soon" pages.

Having said that, the template is really bare bones in terms of "what you see is what you get" with no recent updates. This template would make for a good foundation but future customizations would really be up to you.

Built with Bootstrap, the Butter Website Theme features some very cool options like video backgrounds and Google Maps integrations.

The template is older but does a good job balancing different coffee shop or restaurant needs, with sections made to prompt reservation requests and to call out services.

Note: This theme is not made to sell coffee online. It has interesting page layouts used to highlight the menu and prompt customer to "order" through the website - but is used to facilitate in-person visits and customers.

Cuppino makes for an interesting HTML5 template as the full eCommerce functionality is available but the layouts and design look a little different than most themes.

The template comes with a internal search function, Google Fonts, and is well optimized for speed making it suitable for online coffee stores looking to scale.

The design is heavy on the use of large high resolution imagery, which also lends itself well to an in-person coffee shop with really good photography.

Greenfarm is obviously not a coffee website template in the traditional sense. While not made specifically to sell coffee online the the template can easily be used for that purpose which is why we included it here.

The template continues to be updated and has strong reviews with respect to design quality and customer support.

The built-in aesthetic would lend itself to a sustainable / equitable online coffee retailer looking to promote rainforest alliance certified organic coffee and similar products.

The template's most impressive features are the comparison page layouts and "countdown" layouts it supports:

It doesn't take too much imagination to see how you could keep the color scheme (or even cutomize it a little) and swap out the images and use the template for an HTML5 based coffee website.
